Website Design

Websites can be beautiful but they should also be intuitive and clear. The simplest website seems so straightforward because an incredible amount of design work went into getting to such an elegant solution. Since beginning mainly as a website illustrator, I have lately moved into the role of implementor and designer. I enjoy tackling complex user flow challenges and designing new features that allow the site to evolve yet maintain consistency and accessibility.

MicrobiomeDB Analysis Redesign

microbiomedb.org
2022
Responsibilities: Led user-flow redesign, prototyping, contributed to implementation, created graphics.

Motivation: When we switched to an improved backend, the user experience needed a simplified flow to match. After many iterations, we arrived at a flow that minimized clicks and overall complexity for the user.

Tools and technology: React, TypeScript, React-Plotly, Figma, Visx, Illustrator.

Center for Complex Biological Systems

2018, Commissioned
Responsibilities: Overall design, logo, and illustrations.

Motivation: The Center for Complex Biological Systems was brand new at this time and did not yet have an identity. Through brainstorming with stakeholders we gave it a circuit board theme that represents how the members of the CCBS connect. I especially enjoyed this theme as I got to work with my electrical engineer family members to better understand and illustrate these wiring concepts.

2020, Commissioned
Responsibilities: Overall design, logo, and illustrations.

Motivation. Dr. Lydon-Staley was looking for his first lab website. He enjoyed poppy colors and simplicity, so I took a minimalistic approach to his site. I enjoyed the challenge of adapting some of his scientific figures to fit the fuchsia theme.
